If there is one thing I am passionate about it is building people’s confidence in themselves. Growing up confidence is something which I have had to build back up, especially as I left university when it hit an all time low.
Building up confidence takes time, it is not easy. It takes a lot of self-reflection. Low self-esteem can stem from a range of issues, for me personally, I registered a lot of my worth based on what others thought of me. It brought me anxiety, pressure and the need for perfection which is something no one can achieve. I basically felt like I was not good enough – something I can still struggle with from time to time.
One of the first things I had to fix was to get happy in my own skin. I consciously practise self-care by listening to my body, making sure I am nourishing it properly, getting enough sleep and making time to live in the moment from time to time. Without self-care, I do not think I would have been able to make the changes I have made over the past year.
The next thing I did was accepting not everyone will like the decisions I make and you know what, that is ok. You know yourself and as long as you are happy with the life you are living and how you are living it, that is all that matters. The only exception to the above is my parents. Once you realise this, you will feel like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders.
Being kinder to myself when I make mistakes is something I still work on but makes a great difference. We are human and we all make mistakes, often they do not have the devastating effect we imagine they would. This took me a while to put into practice but if you make a tiny mistake, admit it then forget it. It has happened, nothing can be done to reverse it, what matters is how you move on from it. The best thing to do is accept it, move on and start afresh.
Of course, building confidence is not as easy as it sounds on paper, it takes time, dedication and a lot of self-reflection. It is something I could talk about for hours. If you want to see more I did a Facebook live a week ago answering a few of your questions about confidence.
Another thing which has helped to put things into perspective the book Confidence by Katie Piper. If you know Katie and her story, you will know there is no one better to talk in depth about confidence and how you can find in from within yourself – regardless of your circumstance.
